Mid Offaly Housing Association

Sister Mary

Sr. Mary was born in Clontibret, Co. Monaghan. She started school when she was four. When she was not in school she helped on the farm, doing chores around the farm and the house.
There were seven in her family, two boys and three girls. At the time the boys went to a boys school and the girls went to a girls school.
Her hobbies included camogie and tennis. She still plays table tennis and she goes to most masses in the parish. She also enjoys whist, reading and walking.
She went to Donegal and to Dublin to train as a nun. When she was finished training to be a nun she taught in an all girls school for a few years in Fermanagh. After teaching for a few years she was finally assigned to her hometown of Castleblaney where she stayed for many years.
In September 1999 she was assigned to Mountbolus to help in the elderly people’s houses and she pays the bills cleans houses, minds the elderly people, helps prepare for parties, cleans the clothes, washes the dishes and does the dusting. Herself and Ronnie Bryant started the computer classes in Ard Aoibhinn.
Sr. Mary was asked to move to other locations but she refused. She is a great asset to Ard Aoibhinn.
Her sisters and brothers are all married; she enjoys visiting them and her nephews and nieces. She often visits her sister in Dunboyne. But most of her relatives live in the North. She lives beside May Gath. She drives some of the residents to Mass. She keeps in contact with her school friends and last year about ten of them met up and one came from Florida!
