Mid Offaly Housing Association

Gleann Ard

After Ard Aoibhinn was successfully built and paid for the committee wanted to encourage more families to come to Mountbolus village. They decided to build houses for young families to do this. So they called it Gleann Ard. They asked for the site behind Ard Aoibhinn and the County Council gave it to them. The County Council thought it was a good idea to get more families in Mountbolus. A local builder Tim Guinan built the houses. The committee did not have to raise funds this time, because they went with an organisation called RESPOND, which builds houses throughout Ireland. They built 12 houses, a large community room with a large kitchen and a laundry room.
The first sod was turned in October 1999 and the official opening was in July 2001. President Mary Mc Aleese opened it and planted a rare walnut tree. It was a great success and now 12 families live in Gleann Ard. Their children go to Mountbolus School. Gleann Ard helps the community and it especially helps Mountbolus School. It has brought up the number of children in Mountbolus.
