| Funds When the committee started to build the houses, they had no money and they needed just over £300,000. They got £270,000 off the E.U, County Council and the Social Housing. The committee were struggling to get £30,000, which they needed, for the finishing touches. School reunions, raised over £10,000, and they were held in Gortnamona, Coolanarney and Mount Bolus. These were the best fundraisers. Historical walks were another type of fundraiser, which was a big success. They went to Annaghmore Lake. They had ceilís, sponsored cycle, held a table quiz and set dancing, American tea parties, garden fetes, church gate collections, nature walks, a golf classic and many other events to raise the money. By the time all the fundraisers were over the committee still needed a lot of money.
When they were finished they did not have enough money. The committee
got a loan at 0% interest off the Sisters of Mercy. This money was paid
back in three years by rent, which they got from the residents. |
